5 Key elements of a healthy lifestyle
If you are looking to build a healthier life for yourself, there are 5 key elements that you need to consider:
- Sleep
- Movement
- Nutrition
- Balance/stress management
- Positive attitude toward life
All these elements form the foundation of a healthy lifestyle and most importantly, all these five elements are interconnected. If one is out of balance, it will impact the other elements.
If the imbalance continues for a longer period, it is likely to cause an overwhelm in your system.
This overwhelm can result in physical health decline, mental health issues, reduced productivity, unhealthy coping strategies (e.g. overeating, substance abuse, etc.), loss of enjoyment, etc.
As you are going on this journey on 5 steps to healthy living, make sure to keep these 5 key elements of a healthy lifestyle in mind.

5 Steps to a healthy lifestyle
All right my friends, let’s get this show on the road.
I guess by now you have figured that there is something about the number 5, right? 5 key elements of a healthy lifestyle, 5 steps to a healthy lifestyle, 5 steps to maintain a healthy lifestyle…5 is a magic number along our journey and it has a reason.
The number 5 symbolizes motivation, determination and courage, but most importantly, the number 5 symbolizes major life changes, let’s make it happen together.
1. Journal about your ideal self
Journaling is a great way to quickly analyze and better understand a situation and get the necessary insights to help you facilitate change moving forward.
Get your journal or a few sheets of paper and go through the journal prompts below.
Journal prompts:
- What does it mean to you to be healthy?
- What are the things that you already do to support your health?
- Are you getting enough sleep?
- What does your exercise routine look like?
- What are you doing regularly to nourish your soul?
- What is something you should stop doing right now to support your health and well-being?
- What is something you can start doing right now to support your health and well-being?
To get the most out of your journal exercise, don’t overthink it. Be honest with yourself and write down what comes up.
Honesty is the biggest catalyst for change.
2. Understand your ‘Why’
Knowing and understanding ‘why’ you want something is key to changing a behaviour pattern.
Apart from that, your ‘why’ will guide you to your intention.
Ask yourself:
- Why do you want to live a healthy lifestyle?
- What would change for you if you lived a healthy lifestyle?
- How different would your life look?
- Would it change you as a person? What kind of person would you be?
Your ‘why’ is your personal, emotional motivation. It could be for example that you want to lose weight to fit into your favourite pair of jeans again, it could be that you want to feel more confident in your skin, or maybe you are looking to strengthen your body to release physical pain, etc.
Take time to define your ‘why’. The clearer you are about your ‘why’ the stronger your intention.
3. Identify unhealthy habits
Bad habits or unhealthy habits keep you from living the best possible version of yourself. And as you can imagine, bad habits also harm your health and well-being.
Go back to your notes from the journal exercise in step 1, specifically to the question: ‘What is something you should stop doing right now to support your health and well-being?‘
Use the insights from the journal exercise to make a list of all your bad habits.
A few examples of bad habits or unhealthy habits are:
- Skipping meals
- Going to bed late
- Constant procrastination
- Bad time management
- Making excuses all the time
- etc.
Once your list of bad habits is complete, take a few moments to reflect upon them.
Don’t judge yourself. We all have bad habits. However, most of the time, these bad habits are unconscious. But by writing them down you are already taking a step towards changing your bad habits into good habits.
4. Define a clear goal
Defining a clear goal will help to keep yourself motivated as it gives you something to focus on.
In addition to this, it helps you measure your progress along the way.
To set your goal, determine exactly where you are right now. From there define where you want to be in XX days/weeks/months/etc.
Be realistic with the timings you set for yourself and make sure to define some smaller milestones along the way too.
Change is not easy, it takes courage and consistent effort. Make sure to celebrate every time you achieve one of these smaller milestones. Achieving these smaller milestones will boost your motivation and encourage you to keep going.
Write down your goal and put it somewhere visible so that you can see it every day.
Stick it on your fridge (yes that is a classic), your bathroom mirror, place a Post-it on your desk, make it your phone and/or laptop screen background, etc.
Let this be your reminder and daily motivation.
5. Create your healthy lifestyle plan
Close the circle and change these bad and unhealthy habits into good habits.
If you are e.g. skipping meals, think about starting meal prepping to ensure that you are covered for on-the-go snacks/meals, etc.
Or if you are e.g. not getting enough sleep, would establishing an evening routine help you?
If you like to snack, can you change your usual go-to snacks to healthy snack options instead? Etc.
Go through your list of bad habits and think about how you can change them into good habits to help you achieve your healthy lifestyle goal in the future.
This can be overwhelming at first, but keep it simple and focus on the top 3 that you consider must-haves to achieve your healthy lifestyle goal within the time frame that you set for yourself.
With your goal in mind, schedule the things that need to happen during the week in your diary.
Below are a few examples for inspiration:
- allowing 2 hours for meal prepping on Sunday afternoon
- schedule regular exercise
- effective time management
- make space for social connections
- spend time doing a hobby
- regular self-care
- start a journal
- …
5 steps to maintaining a healthy lifestyle
All right, my friends, the groundwork is done.
You have a game plan. Now let’s look at tips and tricks to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle. The tips and tricks below have been a great support along my journey and I hope they will do the same for you.
1. Reconsider your daily routines
Your daily habits shape your reality.
Daily routines play an important part in developing a healthy lifestyle as they help us to establish a structure for healthy habits.
When you incorporate healthy habits into your daily routines, like exercising, meal prep, journaling, etc. With time, these healthy habits become natural, almost effortless parts of your routine.
This consistency helps to reinforce healthy choices making it easier to sustain them moving forward.
Along my journey, I established a morning and evening routine. In my morning routine, I focus on yoga, meditation, journaling and practising gratitude. Whereas my evening routine is mainly focused on relaxation and skincare. Both routines together help me to stay grounded and allow time for self-care activities and healthy lifestyle choices.
2. Focus on workouts that you enjoy doing
Don’t worry too much about the number of calories that you will burn in one workout session, more importantly, make sure that you enjoy what you are doing.
Why? Because if you enjoy what you are doing, you are more likely to come back to it which is the main point.
Pick an exercise that gets you excited, how about pole dancing, hip hop classes, tap dancing, etc.?
Check the offers in your area, and keep an open mind. Who knows, it might even bring some new friends into your life.
3. Eat with the seasons
Nutrition is one of the 5 key elements that build your foundation for a healthy lifestyle.
Aim for a balanced diet and eating with the seasons could be a great way to help you with that.
Eating with the seasons reconnects you with the natural cycle. And when you eat with the seasons, your body will get exactly the vitamins that it needs during that time of the year.
Ditch the supermarket and head to the local farmers’ market instead. Get curious about your food, learn where it comes from, how it’s grown, etc., and get ready to indulge in freshness and taste.
You will notice that seasonal food not only tastes better, but is cheaper as well.
4. Learn to say ‘no’
Protect your energy, learn to say ‘no’ and make yourself a priority.
This is not always easy, but saying ‘no’ is essential for maintaining boundaries, reducing stress, preserving energy, and fostering personal growth and well-being.
Furthermore, saying ‘no’ enables you to prioritize what matters most to you and live authentically and intentionally.
Keep in mind that you are the most important asset that you have. Treat yourself and your time with respect.
5. Keep showing up for yourself
Starting a healthy lifestyle means saying ‘Yes’ to yourself every single day.
Keep showing up for yourself and be consistent with your newly formed healthy habits.
Focus on all the benefits your healthy lifestyle choices have already caused in your life and remind yourself about your vision and life goals every day.
Remember, you are worth living a healthy lifestyle. Do your best to support you the best way you can. If you don’t do it for yourself, no one else will.
How to live a healthy lifestyle FAQ
What are some healthy first steps to change your lifestyle?
As we established earlier, starting a healthier lifestyle begins with inner work and intentional planning.
Below are three first steps that will help you to cultivate change in your life:
- Know your core values – knowing your core values will give you insight into the things that matter most to you in life; your core values will also help you to stay rooted and grounded and guide your decision-making process
- Commit to yourself – understand that you are making these changes for your personal well-being and at the same time understand that you are worthy of living a healthy and happy life

Taking these foundational steps will help you build the foundation for lasting change and a lifestyle that reflects your deepest values.
What are the top 5 healthy habits?
If you asked me, the top 5 healthy habits are:
- A healthy sleeping pattern – go to bed at a decent time, make sure you get all the sleep that you need and be consistent with your bedtime; an evening routine can be a great support to help you with this
- Keep a balanced diet – focus on a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to fuel your body and support overall health
- Stay hydrated – drinking enough water helps with digestion, circulation, skin health, and energy levels. Aim for 8 glasses a day as a baseline
- Exercise regularly – incorporate at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily; movement supports cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles, and lifts the mood
- Practice mindfulness activities – daily mindfulness activities such as journaling, practising gratitude, meditation, etc. can help reduce stress, enhance mental clarity, and improve emotional resilience
I truly believe that all these habits form a strong foundation for a healthy lifestyle.
What are the top 5 health food tips for a balanced diet?
Please note that I am not a nutritionist and of course, you have to consider your personal dietary requirements, but generally speaking, the top 5 health food tips to support a balanced diet are:
- Focus on whole foods – prioritize whole, unprocessed foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. All these provide essential nutrients and fibre without added sugars or unhealthy fats.
- Watch portion sizes – even healthy foods can contribute to weight gain when eaten in excess. Use mindful portion control, especially with calorie-dense foods like nuts and oils.
- Limit added sugars – Reduce your intake of processed snacks, sugary drinks, and sweets. Opt for natural sweetness from fruits and limit artificial ingredients.
- Start meal prep – meal prep is a great way to be more mindful of what you eat and supports you to eat healthy during the week when time might be an issue
- Allow yourself room for a cheat day – it is all about the balance and knowing that you have the option will make it easier to stick to your healthy diet on all other days
These tips can help you achieve a well-rounded, nutrient-dense diet that supports overall health.
Before we wrap up this week’s blog post 5 steps to a healthy lifestyle, there is one last thing that I would like to mention: try not to get obsessed with the outcome.
I know this is easier said than done, but allow yourself some room and grace for failure along the way. Don’t get too hung up on your goal and know that every day is a new day for you to start fresh and focus on your healthy lifestyle goal.

It’s so important to be consistent. Consistency is the key, for sure. When we’re consistent, we’ll achieve whatever we set our minds to.

I agree that being consistent is huge in achieving goals. We need to show up even when we don’t feel like it.
I couldn’t agree more Mandy, consistency is key for changing a behaviour and establishing a new healthy habit.
And in the end we are doing it for us, ourselves, even more of a reason to keep showing up.
These are amazing tips for sticking to a wellness journey. Hydrating is so important to me. I always have a giant bottle of water with me at all times.
