Whether it is the interior of a yoga studio, the lighting, the smell of essential oils, the beautiful big plants, the sculptures, etc. some yoga studios simply feel like a mini spa break as soon as you step into them.

And yes, the space in which you practice yoga matters and if you have an established home yoga practice, having a dedicated home yoga space or a home yoga room can really support and enhance your home yoga practice.

With a ‘less is more’ approach this really does not have to cost a fortune either.

And neither do you need a separate room that you can turn into your home yoga space.

Are you ready to create some harmony and bliss in your home? Perfect, then let’s do this…

Benefits of having a dedicated home yoga space

Having a dedicated home yoga space is a beautiful way to honor yourself as well as your yoga practice.

Top 3 benefits of having a home yoga space:

  • Convenience – having a home yoga space allows you to practice yoga whenever it suits your schedule which makes it easier for you to keep up your regular yoga practice
  • Cost-effective – having a home yoga space can be a cost-effective alternative to studio classes or yoga studio memberships
  • Private Zen Oasis – it’s your sacred space to relax and unwind in the comfort of your own home whenever you need a break from your day or life in general

How to create a home yoga space in 6 simple steps

Below is an easy-to-follow how-to guide helping you to create your personal home yoga space. This how-to guide includes lots of yoga room ideas and interior design inspiration that you can easily adapt to any space, no matter what size your home yoga studio is/will be.

And the best thing is, all the yoga room ideas and interior design inspiration below are budget-friendly, so it won’t cost you a fortune either.

Note: at the end of this blog post, I included an Amazon shopping list for you with a few items that I used to create my home yoga space. You can simply copy and paste or use it for your inspiration.

Step 1: Find the right space in your home

Finding the right place in your home for your home yoga space is key.

And whether you live in a house or a studio apartment, rest assured, you will find a space that is big enough.

Some of you might even have a spare room that they always wanted to turn into a home yoga space. If that is the case for you, great. Consider your location scouting done.

But if this is not you, don’t worry, you can still create your home yoga space, we just have to be a little bit more creative about it…How about working with room dividers would that be an option for you? Or how about a pop-up home yoga space?

Pop-up home yoga spaces work really well for smaller apartments and still give you all the beautiful benefits of having a home yoga studio.

If you don’t have a separate room that you can turn into your home yoga studio, take a look around your house/flat/apartment, etc. and find a space that feels peaceful and quiet to you.

This could be next to a big window, for example, the natural light will be amazing.

Or if you live in a climate that allows you to practice outside, maybe you can use your garden or balcony? Or maybe you find space in your living room, etc.

Be open to all the options that come up and see which spot feels best to you.

Whichever spot you pick, make sure that you have enough space around you so that you can move freely and don’t have to worry about knocking things over when you flow through your yoga poses.

Once you found your spot, close your eyes and visualize yourself practicing in this space. If you can see yourself practicing in this space, look no further, you found your spot for your future home yoga space.

Step 2: Make a plan

Now that we found a spot for your home yoga space, define 1 -2 main things that you would like to get out of your home yoga space in addition to this being a space to practice yoga in.

Simply think about how you want to feel when you step inside this space. Whether this is a separate room or a pop-up space does not matter. How do you want to feel when you step inside your home yoga space?

Are you looking to create a space that allows you to de-stress? Or are you looking for a space that inspires you creatively? Are you looking for a space that allows you to disconnect from the outer world?

Whatever it is, get clear about your main intention(s) for this space, and let this intention(s) guide your decision-making process in the next steps.

Step 3: Colors, lighting, and materials

And now let’s get a bit more concrete and start designing your home yoga space.

In this step, we will focus on suitable colors, lighting options, and possible materials which will help to set the tone for the ambiance of your home yoga space.

Colors

When it comes to yoga room paint colors pick a calm and inviting color palette. Light and creamy colors work really well for a home yoga space.

Use no more than 2 – 3 colors so that the space does not get too busy. And yes, let the colors complement each other.

Lighting

Natural light is always best, for your yoga room lighting. But there are a lot of decorative light options and mood lighting options such as fairy lights, big floor lamps, etc. that can be used to brighten up your space if required.

Focus on warm lights rather than cool lights. And of course, candles are always a great addition too.

Materials

When it comes to materials, consider natural materials such as wood, bamboo, natural stones, etc. to build your home yoga space.

Using natural materials helps to ground and calm yourself.

Step 4: Decoration

Once you have decided on the colors, lighting, and materials, let’s take a look at the decoration items and decoration ideas.

Keep in mind the ‘less is more’ approach and again, whatever decoration items you might consider for your home yoga space, make sure that they are made of natural materials.

Decoration ideas

  • plants – are great space fillers, brighten up the space, and help to bring the space to life
  • wall art – such as macrame, mandalas, dream catchers, etc. can be wonderful additions to your home yoga space
  • sculptures or statues – such as Buddha, Ganesha, Durga, etc. anything you feel drawn to; statues always give a nice touch
  • natural stones and crystals – these are beautiful items that can help to create a grounding energy within the space
  • incent sticks – engage all senses in your practice; incent sticks can help to create a bit of a ritual around your home yoga practice; they also help to quiet the mind

Tip: If you are into meditation, consider getting a meditation pillow. A meditation pillow is a great visual cue as they come in so many different colors, shapes, and patterns, but most importantly it will give you extra comfort during your meditation.

Step 5: Keep your space functional

I totally get it, after talking about all these beautiful decoration items, this might be a little bit of a downer, but it is important to keep your space functional, no matter what size your yoga room is. Functionality is key.

Keeping your space functional will help you to avoid clutter and less clutter means less distraction during your home yoga practice.

Step 6: Keep your space tidy

Always keep your space tidy and clean up after your home yoga practice.

Keeping your space tidy will help to ease your mind and is more inviting to step into next time you come back to your yoga mat.

To help you keep everything tidy, consider getting a big basket in which you can put all your yoga props such as your yoga mat, yoga blocks, blanket, etc.

This way you have it all in one place and it makes cleaning up super simple and efficient.

Tip: Consider the clean up and set up of your space as part of your home yoga practice. You would do the same in the yoga studio. Treat your home yoga space with respect and appreciation.

Home yoga space – questionnaire

How do I make a yoga space in my bedroom?

To create a yoga space in your bedroom, I really recommend considering a pop-up home yoga space.

I used to live in flatshares for many years and the bedroom was my only option for a home yoga space. A pop-up yoga space works really well as it gives you a lot of flexibility. Yes, it does come with a little bit more work as you need to set it up before your practice and store it all away after your practice, but it still is a great option.

When it comes to pop-up home yoga spaces, e.g. for your bedroom, use the same principles (colors, materials, lighting options, etc.) to decorate your bedroom. Think about nice calming wall art, a big green plant, and maybe even a small altar that you can leave all the time. This way you turn your bedroom into a zen oasis which will not only support your home yoga practice but also your well-being overall.

Can I practice yoga without the yoga mat?

Yes, you can practice yoga without the yoga mat, but to be honest with you, I would not recommend it.

There are certain benefits that a yoga mat provides such as cushioning and support for your joints, better grip and stability as you flow through the different yoga poses, insulation from the floor, and in addition to this, there is certainly some magic about unrolling your yoga mat for your yoga practice.

Your yoga mat gives you a defined space to practice on, some yoga mats even come with alignment cues printed on them helping you to keep yourself safe during your yoga practice, etc.

In short, if you are serious about your yoga practice, I would always recommend getting yourself a yoga mat. Your yoga mat can also be an additional visual cue in your home yoga space as yoga mats do come in lots of different colors as well as beautiful prints.

Is it bad to do yoga with your mat on a carpeted floor?

This really depends on the carpet and your personal preference. However, there are a few things that you should consider: stability and grip to keep your home yoga practice safe.

If the carpet is too fluffy and with long hair, you might not have enough stability or a good grip for your mat.

Always make sure that you have a good grip as well as good stability to keep your yoga practice safe.

As with everything in life, the right planning is key when it comes to creating your home yoga space.

Allow yourself enough time to really think it all through: colors, materials, decoration, etc.

Visualize how all the different items come together in your home yoga space and approach the process step by step.

Create a home yoga space that is inviting to you and motivating at the same time. It should be a space you want to step into, a space that helps to make you feel calm and grounded after a long day.

In addition to this, it’s also a great space to step into should you ever need to destress, calm your mind or get a different perspective on things.

    1. Hi Krysten, thanks so much for your comment. The pop-up space works really well for me. I do have to move a coffee table and a chair out of the way before I can unroll my mat, but it is so worth it 😉

  1. I was regular with my yoga practice but then I shifted home and now I don’t practice maybe because I don’t have a ritual or space set for the same. But your post gave me ideas to create my yoga space. I would love to see photographs of your zen garden.

    1. Hi Arti, thanks so much for your comment! So happy to hear that I could give you some ideas. Don’t think I can attach pictures here, but my zen garden is a golden tray and on this tray, I have a little buddha statue, incense sticks, a mala, essential oils which I sometimes put on my temples for my meditation, and a few crystals. Hopefully, I managed to draw a picture for you 😉
