Home yoga studio design ideas for a relaxing and inspiring space
Let’s get creative my friends 🖤 as we look at 6 simple and budget-friendly yoga room design ideas to help you create harmony and bliss and take your home yoga practice to the next level.
As mentioned earlier, this guide is also perfectly suited to help you create a wonderfully calming and relaxing meditation room.
Let’s begin!
1. Find the right space in your home
Some of you might have a spare room that you want to transform into a home yoga space, whereas others might have to be a bit more creative in their approach.
3 things to consider for your location:
- make sure you have enough space around you to move freely
- find a quiet space with minimal distractions
- the flooring should be stable and non-slippery; hardwood floors are ideal, but if you have carpet, ensure it’s firm enough to support your balance and stability during your home yoga practice
Keep an open mind in your search for the perfect space and if your home does not allow enough space for a dedicated home yoga space, think about room dividers, consider a pop-up home yoga space, etc.
Keep an open mind and be creative in the process of finding the right space in your home.
2. Set an intention for your home yoga space
Define 1 – 2 main things that you would like to get out of your home yoga space apart from it being a space to practice yoga in.
Are you looking to create a space that…
- creates comfort and relaxation
- energizes and inspires you
- reflects your style and spirituality
- …
If you intend to create a home yoga space that energizes and inspires you, using vibrant colours, extravagant artwork and other elements that spark joy and excitement will be key when looking at yoga room design ideas.
Or if you intend to create a home yoga space that offers comfort and relaxation, using light or pastel colours, natural materials, plants etc. should be your focus.
3. Colours, lighting, and materials
Once you set your intention for the space it will be easier to pick the right colours, lighting, materials, etc.
Colours
Most yoga studios feature light colours. They make the space seem bigger and create a clean, welcoming, relaxing feeling.
Different colours can have different effects on your mood. By understanding how colours affect your mood, you can mindfully choose the palette for your home yoga space to enhance the specific emotions and intentions you want to cultivate within this space.
The colour blue for example is calming and relaxing, green refreshing, yellow uplifting, etc.
Even if you prefer a neutral base for your yoga room design ideas, you can add accent colours with yoga props, cushions, wall art, etc.

Lighting
Natural light is always best for a home yoga space as it boosts the mood, enhances focus, and connects you with the outdoors.
But there are decorative light options and mood lighting options such as fairy lights, floor lamps, candles, salt lamps, etc. that can be used to brighten up your yoga space.
Warm lights are best for creating a calming and relaxing space, whereas cool light can feel more energizing.
Materials
Choosing the right materials is important to create a supportive and harmonious environment.
Natural materials such as wood, bamboo, plants, natural stones, crystals, etc. can be very calming and grounding.
Even if you are creating an energizing space, having a few natural elements will help to create a balance and bring some grounding into your home yoga space which will help to quiet and calm the mind.
4. Decoration
I always suggest the less is more approach. As fewer items mean fewer distractions, more focus for your yoga or meditation practice.
Yoga and meditation room essentials – a few examples for you:
- plants – are great space fillers, brighten up the space, and help to bring the space to life
- wall art – such as macrame, mandalas, dream catchers, etc. can be great highlighters
- sculptures or statues – such as Buddha, Ganesha, Durga, etc. can add a personal touch
- natural stones and crystals – can help to create a grounding energy
- incent sticks – can help to create a ritual experience, quiet the mind and relax
- essential oil diffuser – supports a sensory experience
- salt lamps – can be super calming and relaxing
5. Keep the space functional
Be practical and keep everything you do functional in your space.
Focusing on functionality ensures:
- safety – a clutter-free environment allows you to move freely
- efficiency – less clutter, fewer distractions for the mind
- longevity – easy maintenance
Ultimately, focusing on functionality will make your home yoga practice and meditation practice more enjoyable and focused.
6. Keep your space tidy
To help you keep your home yoga space tidy, consider different storage options such as baskets, built-in cabinets, floating shelves, portable storage carts, etc.
Maintaining a tidy home yoga space contributes to a more enjoyable, focused, and fulfilling practice experience. It supports physical safety, mental well-being, and a deeper connection to your yoga practice.

Home yoga space FAQ
How do I make a yoga space in my bedroom?
Consider a pop-up home yoga space and follow the same yoga room design ideas as outlined above.
This way you are flexible with the space and turn your bedroom into a sanctuary.
Can I practice yoga without the yoga mat?
Yes, but to be honest with you, I would not recommend it.
There are certain benefits that a yoga mat provides such as cushioning and support for your joints, better grip and stability, etc. Some yoga mats feature alignment cues printed on them helping you to keep yourself safe during your yoga practice.
If you are serious about yoga, I recommend getting a mat and the right mat will usually last you a good few years.
Is it bad to do yoga with your mat on a carpeted floor?
This depends on the carpet and your personal preference.
If the carpet is too fluffy and with long hair, you might not have enough stability or a good grip for your mat.
Stability and grip are important to keep your yoga practice safe.
How would you design your meditation room?
For me, yoga and meditation room are the same as I always start my yoga practice with a few minutes of meditation.
You can apply the exact same principles we just spoke about for your meditation room.
However, I would encourage you to focus on lighter colours to help calm the mind. In addition to this, I would focus on zen touches like for example a Buddha statue or a small zen garden. These little accents and meditation room essentials make all the difference if you ask me.
Keep the less is more approach. The aim is to keep the overall look and feel of your space calm and relaxing.
The right planning is key when creating your home yoga studio and/ or meditation room. Take your time. Do a little bit of a scribble and imagine how all the pieces will come together.
Keep in mind you can always add items to your home yoga studio later on. Take it step by step and enjoy the journey.

I love this! I was just talking with my husband about making a dedicated fitness space. I do yoga, he does circuit training. This was a great post!
So happy you enjoyed reading this Kayla! Have fun creating your fitness space 😉
I totally want to do this, I love yoga but don’t really have a space to practice at the moment.
Hi Krysten, thanks so much for your comment. The pop-up space works really well for me. I do have to move a coffee table and a chair out of the way before I can unroll my mat, but it is so worth it 😉
I was regular with my yoga practice but then I shifted home and now I don’t practice maybe because I don’t have a ritual or space set for the same. But your post gave me ideas to create my yoga space. I would love to see photographs of your zen garden.
Hi Arti, thanks so much for your comment! So happy to hear that I could give you some ideas. Don’t think I can attach pictures here, but my zen garden is a golden tray and on this tray, I have a little buddha statue, incense sticks, a mala, essential oils which I sometimes put on my temples for my meditation, and a few crystals. Hopefully, I managed to draw a picture for you 😉
Great read!
Thank you, Alejandra! So happy you enjoyed the post 😉
