Now, I get it…as a certified Personal Trainer and Yoga Teacher, it probably sounds like an easy thing for me to say as I should know how to live a healthy lifestyle, but trust me, it hasn’t always been that way.
Before I discovered my passion for fitness and wellness, I was stuck in a highly demanding and challenging 9-5 desk job in advertising with long hours, weekend work, lots of work travel and all the other demands that come with chasing career success.
Back then, the idea of living a healthy lifestyle felt completely out of reach. I learned it the hard way: burnout, depression, anxiety, you name it, but after finding myself at a crossroads, I knew I had to make serious changes to my life, so I finally got my sh*t together and made it happen.
The biggest inspiration that helped me to change my life for the better was Yoga.
Yoga turned out to be so much more than just a physical practice; it became my gateway to living a more intentional life. What started as a way to move my body quickly became a tool to help calm my anxiety, clear my mind and reconnect with myself on a deeper level.
Over time, yoga encouraged me to make healthier choices. I became more intentional with the food that I ate, the way I rested and the boundaries I set for myself. Yoga taught me that true health is not just about physical fitness, it is about creating harmony between body, mind and soul.
This shift in perspective became the foundation for every healthy choice I make today.
I didn’t change my life overnight; it happened step by step, and let me tell you, if I can do it, so can you!
The truth is, learning how to live a healthy lifestyle is an investment in a happier and healthier version of yourself, and it will enable you to thrive in all areas of your life.

If you are looking to build a healthier life for yourself, there are 5 key elements you have to consider:
- Sleep
- Movement
- Nutrition
- Balance/stress management
- Positive attitude toward life
These five elements form the foundation of a healthy lifestyle, and the most important thing to remember is that they are all interconnected. When one is out of balance, it can quickly affect the others.
And if this imbalance continues for a longer period, it can create overwhelm in your system. Over time, that overwhelm may lead to physical health decline, mental health challenges, reduced productivity, unhealthy coping strategies (e.g. overeating, substance abuse, etc.) and even the loss of enjoyment in everyday life.
As you begin your journey and follow these 5 steps to a healthy lifestyle, make sure to keep these 5 key elements of a healthy lifestyle in mind. By nurturing each one, you will create the balance and resilience that you will need to thrive now and in the future.

1. Get clear about your ideal self
The first step along your journey of 5 steps to a healthy lifestyle is getting clear about who you want to become.
Take a few moments to reflect on what a healthy lifestyle means for you. What healthy lifestyle habits does your ideal self practice daily? How does your ideal self eat, move, sleep, and manage stress? What mindset does your ideal self have when it comes to facing challenges?
By defining your ideal self, you create a clear roadmap for your 5 steps to a healthy lifestyle, and this clarity will make it easier to set realistic goals and help you stay motivated along the way.
2. Define your ‘Why’: the key to a healthy lifestyle that sticks
Before you establish any new healthy habits, it is crucial to understand ‘why’ you want to live a healthier life.
Your ‘why’ is your personal reason for making a change, the motivation and driver that keeps you going when challenges arise.
Take a moment to reflect: what does a healthier and more balanced life mean to you? Is it having more energy, reducing stress, feeling strong and confident in your body? How would living a healthy lifestyle change you as a person? Whatever it is, your ‘why’ should resonate with you deeply.
Once you are clear on your ‘why’, it becomes the compass to your 5 steps to a healthy lifestyle. Every choice from then on is guided by your reason for committing to change in the first place.

A few examples of bad habits or unhealthy habits are:
- Skipping meals and/or relying on processed foods
- Lack of regular physical activity
- Going to bed late
- Constant procrastination
- Excessive screen time or social media use
- Negative self-talk and/or limiting beliefs
- Making excuses all the time
- etc.
TRUTH is the catalyst for lasting change. Be honest with yourself as you go through this exercise and don’t judge yourself. Everyone has unhealthy habits, and simply acknowledging them is already a super powerful first step.
By identifying unhealthy habits, you create an opportunity to replace them with healthier alternatives that align with your 5 steps to a healthy lifestyle road map, which we will finalise later on.

If you are serious about following the 5 steps to a healthy lifestyle, you need a clear goal. Without a goal, it is easy to lose focus or give up when challenges arise.
As a certified Personal Trainer, I set goals with my clients all the time. The key is to set a SMART goal, one that is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
Here is how to set your SMART goal: Your goal has to be…
- Specific: Define exactly what you want to achieve. Instead of “I want to get fit,” try “I want to go to the gym three times per week.”
- Measurable: Track your progress with clear metrics.
- Achievable: Choose a goal that fits your current lifestyle, but challenges you at the same time.
- Relevant: Make sure that your goal aligns with your vision for healthy living.
- Time-bound: Set a realistic deadline.
Here is an example of a SMART goal:
- Specific: I will go to the gym three times per week and do a 45-minute strength training workout.
- Measurable: I will track my workouts regularly in a fitness app so that I can see my consistency over time.
- Achievable: Three workouts per week are realistic for my current schedule.
- Relevant: Strength training supports my overall healthy lifestyle goals by strengthening my body, boosting my energy levels and feeling more confident in my skin.
- Time-bound: I will stick to this plan for 3 months and then review my progress.

To support your journey into a happier and healthier version of yourself, here are 5 tips that made a HUGE difference for me when I decided to live a healthier lifestyle, and I hope they will help you as much as they helped me!
1. Plan your meals
Meal prep for busy professionals has become a bit of a buzzword, but trust me, it makes life so much easier, especially if you are looking to start a healthier lifestyle. Prepping your meals in advance helps you to eat healthier and avoid last-minute unhealthy choices. Say goodbye to breakfast croissants on the go!

2. Move your body daily
Make it a habit to move your body daily. That does not mean that you have to go to the gym every day; go for a morning walk, take the stairs instead of the elevator, commit to 5-minute morning yoga stretches before you start your day, etc. Consistent activity boosts your energy, supports your overall well-being and keeps your body strong.

I know, this is not easy, but setting healthy boundaries is essential for reducing stress levels in your life and carving out more time for health and well-being. Remember: you are the most important asset that you have! Treat yourself and your time with the respect that you deserve.
5. Fully commit to your future self
Starting a healthy lifestyle means saying ‘YES’ to yourself every single day. Remind yourself of your vision and life goals every day. Be consistent with your new healthy lifestyle habits and focus on the benefits that you are already experiencing, such as more energy, better mood, improved strength, etc.

Watch your portions and limit added sugars by reducing processed snacks and drinks. I agree that being consistent is huge in achieving goals. We need to show up even when we don’t feel like it.
