How to recognise the early signs of holiday stress
Everyone experiences stress differently, especially when navigating the festive season.
For some of us, it shows up as emotions running high; for others, it might be the body hinting that something feels ‘off.’
Noticing these early signs can help you protect your mental health at Christmas before the overwhelm takes over.
Below are some common physical and emotional symptoms of holiday stress:
- feelings of sadness and loneliness
- feelings of grief
- feelings of overwhelm
- increased anxiety
- difficulty concentrating
- body aches, such as a tight neck, headaches, lower back pain, etc.
- lack of sleep
- general nervousness
- weakened immune system
- …
Awareness is always the first step. When you can recognise your personal stress signals, you can take thoughtful, nurturing steps to care for yourself with patience and kindness, the same way you would support a friend going through a tough moment.
7 Powerful tips to support your mental health at Christmas
Whether this time of year feels joyful, hectic, or a mix of everything in between, these 7 tips will help you protect your mental health at Christmas and gracefully navigate the festive season with greater peace, grounding, and emotional balance. You have got this, my friends!
1. Keep up your routines to stay grounded during the festive season
The holiday season often comes with a whirlwind of social gatherings, family commitments, endless to-do lists, and, of course…Christmas shopping. And before you know it, your calendar is overflowing, and there is hardly any time left!
I totally get you, even a Christmas Grinch feels like that, but here is the trick: don’t cut back on your daily routines!
Daily routines act like anchors for your mind, body, and soul. Sticking to your daily routines, whether it is morning yoga stretches, meal prep, or your evening skin care routine, routines always provide a sense of stability and help you stay more grounded and calm, especially while navigating the festive season.
So when you feel the holiday chaos kicking in, don’t abandon all your daily routines and healthy lifestyle habits; instead, be prepared and adjust them to fit the season.
A few simple tweaks can make all the difference:
- Swap a gym session for at-home yoga to save time
- Wake up a little earlier to carve out quiet time for yourself
- Prioritise your evenings for relaxation, winding down and (much-needed) reflection
- Meal prep nourishing meals to avoid last-minute takeout when things get busy
- …
With these simple and small adjustments, you can maintain your balance, protect your mental health at Christmas, and enjoy the season with a greater sense of calm and presence.

2. Let go of ‘perfect’
One of the biggest sources of stress while navigating the festive season (or life in general) is the pressure to create the ‘perfect’ holiday.
Whether it is the ideal family gathering, picture-perfect decorations, or finding the perfect gift for everyone on your list, these expectations can quickly become overwhelming, causing unnecessary pressure and stress.
Ditch the word ‘perfect’ from your holiday vocabulary. A flawless holiday doesn’t exist unless you are living in a Hollywood movie.
Instead, give yourself permission to let go of things that don’t deserve your peace of mind.
Embrace the beauty in imperfection, and remember that the most meaningful moments often arise from simple, unplanned, and heartfelt experiences.
Practising this mindset is a powerful way to support your mental health at Christmas and cultivate authentic joy, rather than constantly striving for an ideal that has nothing to do with reality and only exists in the mind.

3. Acknowledge your feelings and honour your emotional needs
Navigating the festive season can bring up a wide range of emotions, such as missing a loved one, feeling burnt out from work, being overwhelmed by life changes, navigating complicated family dynamics, or feeling the pressure to ‘stay cheerful’ even when you are struggling.
It is important to pause, check in with yourself, and honour your emotional needs. Instead of pushing through or putting on a ‘happy face,’ give yourself permission to feel what is truly there and keep in mind that it is okay to experience the full spectrum of emotions; after all, this is what makes us human.
Showing yourself grace and compassion in these moments is a form of true self-care, and taking time to acknowledge your feelings supports your mental health at Christmas and beyond.
A powerful way to explore and understand your emotions is through journaling. I love journaling, and I know many of you do too!
Even taking just a few minutes to reflect can help you better process what you are feeling, support your mental health at Christmas, and bring you back to a place of clarity, grounding, and calm.
Journal prompts to help you explore your emotions:
- What emotions am I noticing in this moment, and what might they be trying to tell me?
- Which holiday expectations are causing me stress, and how can I release them?
- What moments or people bring me genuine joy, and how can I focus on these?
- How can I be kinder to myself when I feel overwhelmed or sad?
- What small act of self-care can I do today to nurture my emotional well-being?
- What boundaries do I need to set to better protect my energy?

4. Make time for self-care activities
The best gift you can give yourself this holiday season is making time for self-care at Christmas. Carving out moments to recharge and relax is SO essential while navigating the festive season.
Turn your home into a winter wonderland, an environment you love coming back to, unwind with a good book, order your favourite takeaway and watch a feel-good Christmas movie, do an online yoga class, write down what you are thankful for this year, or simply enjoy a warm bath with your favourite essential oils.
Taking the time to nurture your body, mind, and soul helps you recharge so that you can approach the holidays with a refreshed heart and clear mind.
Yes, it sounds cliché, but it is so true: ‘you can’t pour from an empty cup,’ especially not during the busy holiday season when emotions are running high.

5. Set healthy boundaries to protect your energy during the holidays
The holiday season often comes with expectations that can stretch you thin.
Remember: you are allowed to say “no” – always!
Setting healthy boundaries is a crucial way to protect your energy and safeguard your well-being while navigating the festive season.
Boundaries don’t just protect you, they also foster respectful, balanced, and healthy relationships with the people around you, friends and family alike.
Be honest with yourself, your family, and friends about what you can and cannot commit to. Saying “no” doesn’t make you selfish; it is an act of self-respect and self-care at Christmas and beyond!
Boundaries aren’t barriers; consider them as bridges.
By setting them thoughtfully, you create space for a more peaceful, grounded, and joyful holiday season for both yourself and those around you at the same time!
6. Stay flexible and go with the flow
Not everything will go as planned during the holidays, and that is perfectly okay. In fact, that is life!
Maybe the turkey burns, bad weather disrupts your travel plans, or the gift you ordered arrives late.
Instead of letting these hiccups create stress for yourself, flip the script and embrace the imperfections. Often, it is the unexpected moments that become the most memorable.
Let things unfold naturally, release the need for control, and focus on finding joy in the surprises along the way.
Cultivating flexibility in your mindset allows you to navigate the festive season with more ease and grace.
7. Stick to your holiday budget for a stress-free season
One of the biggest sources of stress while navigating the festive season is financial pressure. From gifts and decorations to travel and holiday meals, it is easy to get swept up in spending and feel overwhelmed.
Financial stress can affect your emotional well-being, leading to anxiety, guilt, or even resentment. Setting clear financial boundaries gives you the freedom to enjoy the season without the looming worry of overspending.
Start by creating a realistic budget for gifts, meals, and other holiday activities and commit to sticking to it. Get creative with thoughtful, low-cost ideas like DIY crafts, homemade cookies, or handmade Christmas cards, etc.
Practising mindful spending is a simple yet powerful way to support your mental health at Christmas, and it will help you to enjoy a calmer and more grounded holiday season.
Remember, the true value of the holidays isn’t in the price tag, it is in the love, intention, and care behind your actions.

Confessions from a Christmas Grinch
Christmas has always been a difficult time for me. Dealing with grief or difficult emotions during the holidays remains tender, complicated, and deeply personal.
Over the years, I have established new Christmas traditions for myself, which are based on putting myself first and leveraging this time of the year to reflect, recharge and set my intentions and goals for the upcoming year.
Creating your own traditions
I still honour the traditions I genuinely enjoy, like visiting Christmas markets, baking Christmas cookies, and putting up some festive lights and cosy decorations at home.
And of course Christmas gifts! I LOVE giving gifts to friends and family. Over the years, I have embraced DIY Christmas gifts such as crocheting leg warmers or scarves, making candles, bespoke chocolates, etc.
DIY gifts are great as they allow you to get creative and tie Christmas back to what it really is: giving from the heart.
Keep what you like about the holiday season, embrace it and give it your personal touch!
Solo holidays and soul-family time
For the actual Christmas days, I often choose to go away, sometimes taking a solo holiday, other times staying with close friends I call my soul family.
Being alone during the holidays might feel intimidating at first, but trust me, it can be incredibly liberating. Solo travel gives you space to breathe, reflect, and reconnect with yourself, free from the noise and pressure of all the traditional festivities.
And honestly? The benefits of solo travel are HUGE. Solo trips can spark personal growth in ways you never expected!
And when I do choose to spend Christmas with others, I make sure I am surrounded by friends who truly know me, people I deeply trust, who understand my emotions during this time of year, and with whom I never have to pretend or hide who I am or what I am feeling.
Reflect, reset, and set intentions for the year ahead
The last week of the year has become sacred for me. I use it to reflect on the past year, set my intentions for the year ahead, and create a vision board.
Yes, I know, vision boards are so 2000’s but I LOVE them, and they have worked out for me in so many ways!
Over the years, this mindful approach to closing the year has supported my personal growth, helped me develop a deeper sense of purpose and start the new year with grounded energy, more focus, and joy.
But most importantly, taking these intentional steps has helped me to build a life that I want for myself, a life that feels in alignment with who I am.

From my experience, if you are open and honest with your loved ones, most will understand and respect your decisions. Of course, there are always a few who disagree or think they know what is best for you, and that is okay. Let them be.
And yes, my traditions have changed over the years. I have years when I am a full-on Christmas Grinch, and then I have years when I dive in and out of the celebrations.
What matters most is that you stand in your truth and do what feels right for you! Honouring your needs, setting healthy boundaries, and protecting your energy and mental health at Christmas is important while navigating the festive season. Make sure not to lose yourself along the way, my friends!

Navigating the festive season can be challenging, yes, I definitely hear you on this one, my friends! Keep in mind that you are not alone; many people feel this way, and it is completely ok to admit when the holidays feel heavy or overwhelming.
And if you feel that you need support from a professional this Christmas season, look after yourself and get yourself the help and support that you need.
