For many years, my life was LOUD: fast-paced days, never-ending to-do lists, social commitment, distractions everywhere around me, constantly demanding more and more from me. And to be completely honest with you, back then, I LOVED it!
As back then, being busy was my comfort zone. Being busy made me feel good, needed, it made me feel that I had achieved something and deep down, I thought I was thriving within all the noise around me.
But eventually, ‘busy’ caught up with me, the constant go-go-go mode, constant striving for the next better thing, it left me feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, anxious, and disconnected from myself.
I felt lost in my own comfort zone!
I started to crave something different, more peace, more clarity, a deeper connection with myself and above all, more purpose in life.
I am a girl of extremes, always have been, so the solution for me was clear: I had to cut back the noise. I had to let go of the noise that made me feel so comfortable for so many years. I had to clean up my chaos.
This is where my journey to simplify life began. I started with small, intentional choices to quit the things that were stealing my energy and joy.
Today I am sharing 7 things I let go of over the years that helped me to simplify life in different ways and finally create more space for calm, clarity and a deeper sense of purpose.

Simplify life today: 7 things worth letting go of
All right, my friends, if you are ready to simplify life and create more space for the things that matter most, let me show you exactly how I did it.
But first of all, let me tell you that this is not about an overnight transformation or rigid rules. As I said earlier, this is about small, intentional steps and choices that can shift your energy, focus and mindset over time.
Below, I am sharing 7 things worth letting go of habits, routines, and mindsets that were quietly stealing my time, energy, and peace. Some of these might feel familiar to you, and some may surprise you. Either way, each one is a powerful opportunity to simplify life and reconnect with what truly matters.
By letting go of what no longer serves you, you open the door to more calm, clarity, and joy in your everyday life.
1. Letting go of physical clutter
The fact is: physical clutter creates mental chaos. And if you are wondering how to simplify your life, this is one of the most powerful places to start.
Let me explain why: my first big decluttering challenge came when I moved from Berlin back to the UK. For the very first time in my life, I had a fully equipped apartment, and suddenly, I had stuff everywhere.
I started with my closet and shoe collection; anything old, unused for over six months, or still with the price tag on, went straight to charity. From there, I tackled tech gadgets, furniture items, kitchen utensils, paperwork, notebooks, journals, and books I had collected over the years. Anything that no longer served a purpose had to go.
Let me tell you, this had a very cleansing effect! And clearing my physical space cleared my mental space too! Every item I donated or threw out felt like releasing emotional baggage I hadn’t even realised I was carrying.
I made a promise to myself: when it comes to ‘stuff’, I only keep what I truly love, use and need. And what I learned is that we actually don’t need much at all.
Letting go of all my physical clutter created space, helped me to reduce stress and at the same time allowed space for more clarity and focus.
Decluttering is a super powerful first step to simplify life, because the mindset you build in this process naturally flows into other areas such as your habits, routines, relationships and daily choices.

2. Face your finances
Money isn’t always an easy topic, and many of us avoid it for years, myself included.
But I eventually realised that ignoring my finances was quietly adding more stress and anxiety to my daily life.
It wasn’t that I wasn’t working hard. Far from it, I was building my career in London’s glossy advertising world. Paychecks came regularly, but somehow the money always left my account faster than it arrived.
My excuse? Life in a big city is expensive: rent, bills, social events, new clothes, shoes (so guilty on this one), makeup…you name it.
But the truth is, I wasn’t managing my finances, not at all! I avoided looking at my bank account. Savings? Back then, practically nonexistent. My credit card? Magic plastic!
The big mindset change happened for me when I was planning to take a year off work to travel, and I knew I had to break the cycle. So I sat down, faced the numbers and put together a plan.
I started tracking my expenses, creating a monthly budget allowance, cancelling unused subscriptions, and setting up automated savings.
What began as a simple spreadsheet grew into a financial system, with different ‘money pots’, allowances for essentials and joys alike, rent, utility bills, social activities, travel, self-care, and even a tattoo fund. A girl has to know her basics!
Slowly but surely, I watched my money grow. And I loved it! It felt really good to be completely honest with you, as finally, I was in control of my finances.
Think of money as energy, and when you begin to see clearly where it goes, you will naturally start to simplify life in ways that support your future self in the best possible way.

3. Let go of toxic people and relationships
One of the most transformative ways to simplify life is to release people who no longer support your growth. I know this sounds harsh, but hear me out on this one.
I would say that we often stay in relationships out of habit, obligation or fear of conflict. But the longer we ignore that inner nudge telling us that something doesn’t feel right here, the more our energy and peace suffer along the way.
Friendships change over the years. I had my fair share of these, and yes, it hurts when you decide to let go of people, but at the same time, if you feel that you can’t be yourself with a certain person, need to watch out for what you are telling them to avoid an argument, say yes to everything they want to do to keep peace, what is the point?
Understand that letting go doesn’t mean you are unkind or selfish; it means you value yourself enough to make space for authentic connections. When you stop investing in relationships that no longer serve you, you create room for deeper, more meaningful bonds that can bring true joy, inspiration and alignment.
Take a moment to look at the people in your life. Who lifts you up? Who leaves you feeling drained or anxious? Being intentional about the relationships you keep is one of the most powerful ways to reclaim your time, energy, and emotional well-being.
Today, I certainly have fewer friends, but I know that the ones I have are truly important to me, and I matter to them. Interests feel much more aligned; relationships feel supportive, inspirational, and genuine.

4. Quit alcohol
When I lived in London and worked in the fast-paced, high-energy world of advertising, grabbing a drink after work felt pretty much automatic. There was always a reason to celebrate a win, unwind after a hectic day, catch up with friends, etc.
And without even realising it, alcohol became my go-to for relaxing and socialising.
But it also came at a cost: painful hangovers, poor sleep, lost weekends, creeping anxiety, and a growing sense of disconnect from myself.
For me, there was no dramatic rock-bottom moment when it came to alcohol. I simply decided to take a short break, just a few weeks, to see how I would feel without it. And those weeks quietly turned into months… then years.
And honestly? I have never looked back. Sure, there have been the occasional slip-ups, a few birthday drinks here, Christmas drinks there, but each one reminded me why I chose this path in the first place.
I think that letting go of alcohol has been one of the most powerful things to quit on my journey to simplify life. Today, my mind is clearer, I feel more grounded and present, and my anxiety is softer. There is no more lost time at weekends due to hangovers, and I get to use my time to do more of the things that truly matter to me.
5. Swapped daily stress with intentional routines
I began optimising my daily routines when I decided to launch my blog, letyourshadowshine.com.
With my busy 9-to-5 job, I struggled to find extra time during the week, and as I really wanted to start my blog, I had to come up with a solution!
My brain works best in the mornings, and that is the moment when my morning routine checklist was born. I decided to get up earlier to carve out some time to work on my blog before my 9-5 job began.
Over time, these early hours became sacred and turned into real quality and me time. I started my day even earlier to carve out time for morning yoga stretches, personal development, such as self-reflection journal prompts, daily gratitude activities, etc.
The results were incredible: calmer mornings, more productive days, and finally launching my blog, a dream I had for years. Apart from all this magic, my anxiety eased as I began to feel more grounded, peaceful, and aligned from deep within.
Eventually, I added a slower, softer evening routine to support better sleep, maintain a proper skincare ritual (much needed in your late 30s) and help me prepare mindfully for the day ahead.
Simplify life = create intentional routines.
Routines have a quiet magic. They anchor your day, shape your mindset, and gently guide you toward a life that feels more intentional. Building these intentional routines helps you to reclaim control over your time and energy.
6. Choose daily movement over comfort
As a certified Personal Trainer and Yoga Teacher, I am biased, yes, but I truly believe in the power of movement.
Even though I have been active my whole life, from gymnastics and classical ballet to martial arts, choosing daily movement over comfort hasn’t always been my first choice.
Let’s be honest: skipping a workout or taking a “rain check” is easy, especially when life is busy and loud.
But here’s the thing: every time you take that rain check, you are putting your physical and mental well-being on hold.
Today, I live by the philosophy of ‘strong body, strong mind’. Movement is one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to clear your head, ease anxiety, and nurture your well-being. I have experienced this myself!
In yoga, I found an outlet for depression, anxiety, and grief. Through regular practice, I learned to ground myself, let go of fear, embrace trust, and connect with the healing power of my heart.
Yoga offered me a gateway to my emotions, and along this journey of self-discovery, I found my truth and the key to living a more authentic life, which is led by the heart rather than the mind. (Read my full story)
Shifting my mindset and understanding that I was blocking my physical and mental well-being changed everything. Once that clicked, everything shifted. Daily movement stopped feeling like a chore and became an act of self-care. I began to see it as a way to honour my body, boost my mood, and reconnect with myself.
Choosing to move daily is one of the essential things to embrace if you want to simplify life, feel more energised, focused, and truly alive.

7. Let go of who I thought I should be
From the moment we are born, we are taught to fit in. Acceptance feels like a mission, and for years, I shaped myself to meet the expectations of others, following paths that looked shiny on the outside but felt totally misaligned on the inside.
Learning how to simplify your life means being radically honest with yourself about who you are and what you truly want to create for yourself in this lifetime. It is about quitting the persona that doesn’t serve you and leaning into your most authentic self.
Below are three ways you can start this process:
- Define your core values – Think of your values as your personal DNA; they help you define who you are at your essence and guide every choice you make in your everyday life. Hence, they are so important to understand.
- Stop chasing ‘shoulds’ – Let go of what society, family, or friends expect from you. Start making decisions that feel TRUE and ALIGNED with your own path.
- Embrace self-love exercises – Show up for yourself every day. Honour your needs, celebrate your wins, and forgive yourself for the missteps along the way.
From my experience, the more you lean into your truth, the lighter life becomes. Not overnight, but gradually, life shifts from a performance to a journey of self-discovery.
Quitting these old expectations and patterns is one of the most profound things to quit if you want to simplify life and live fully on your own terms.

FAQ: How to simplify your life
What does it mean to simplify life?
Simplifying life means intentionally reducing clutter, noise, stress, and distractions so that you can focus on what truly matters to you. It is about quitting old habits, mindsets, and routines that drain your energy and creating space for peace, clarity, and fulfilment. Simplifying life starts with small, intentional choices that bring you closer to the life that you want to create for yourself.
How can I start to simplify my life today?
Start by identifying the areas that feel most overwhelming or draining. For example, your physical space, daily routines, your finances, or relationships. Then, take small steps to let go of what no longer serves you. For example, declutter your home, create intentional routines, track your spending, or release toxic relationships. Every action, no matter how small, will bring you closer to a calmer, more intentional life filled with a deeper sense of purpose.
Which “things to quit” make the biggest impact when simplifying life?
This is different for everyone. But generally speaking, the most impactful things to quit are the ones stealing your time, energy, and joy. Common examples include unhealthy routines, negative thought patterns, physical clutter, and habits that fuel stress or anxiety. Quitting these allows you to live more intentionally and reclaim clarity, peace, and fulfilment. You got this!
Simplify life: my final thoughts and key learnings
We live in a world that equates hustle with worth and excess with happiness.
Choosing to simplify your life goes completely against that noise, and yes, it will challenge you, stretch you, and push you far outside your comfort zone. But the truth is: the peace, clarity, and freedom on the other side are so worth it.
For me, ‘simplify life’ became more than just an idea; it became a way of living.
By cutting back the noise and distractions, I created space to hear my own thoughts again, to reconnect with my body, and to rediscover what truly matters to me.
Over time, I began to realise that simplifying life isn’t about doing less just for the sake of it, it’s about doing less of what drains you so you can do more of what fills you up.
It is not about perfection. It is about making small, brave choices every day to release what no longer serves you, and that means the habits, mindsets, and patterns that keep you feeling stuck. Each time you let go, life gets lighter. You begin to move through your days with more ease, clarity, and confidence.
If you asked me, simplifying your life isn’t just about clearing space; it is about coming home to yourself. It’s the path to inner peace, freedom, and a life that feels fully and authentically yours.
