Over the past few years (especially in the Western world), yoga has become a world of extreme flexibility, arm balances, handstands, and super-slim individuals wearing the latest Lululemon outfits or almost nothing. But I promise you, this is not what yoga is, nor what yoga is about.
Yoga is for everyone, no matter what age or body type you are; you don’t need to be flexible, and whether you can or can’t do a handstand does not define you as a yogi.

Here are my top 10 yoga tips for beginners, based on the questions I most often get from new students who are learning how to start their yoga journey and build a consistent yoga practise.
1. You don’t need to be flexible to do yoga
Let’s clear up yoga myth #1: you don’t need to be flexible to do yoga. Not at all.
Flexibility is actually one of the benefits of yoga, and you can develop it over time through regular practice.
No matter what age or body type you are, on the yoga mat, everyone is welcome, always.
Each yoga pose offers different variations, accommodating a wide range of abilities and body types.
In addition, there are yoga accessories and yoga props such as yoga blocks, yoga straps, bolsters, etc., to support your yoga practice, helping you get the most benefits from each yoga pose.

2. Find the right yoga style to begin your practise
One of the most important yoga tips for beginners is finding the right yoga style for your body, goals, and energy levels.
But with so many different types of yoga available, choosing a style can feel overwhelming, I know.
Below are some common yoga styles. Have a read and see what resonates most with you.
Vinyasa Yoga
A dynamic, flowing style where breath is linked with movement. Often called Vinyasa Flow or Flow Yoga. Depending on the pace, this style can be physically demanding.
Hatha Yoga
A slower, more gentle yoga style focusing on basic yoga postures. Great for beginners looking to build strength, flexibility, and balance while learning proper alignment.
Ashtanga Yoga
A structured and physically challenging practice following a fixed sequence of poses linked with breath. Best suited for those who enjoy routine and intensity.
Yin Yoga
A slow-paced, calming style where poses are held for 3–5 minutes. Yin yoga targets deep connective tissues and helps improve flexibility and relaxation.
Iyengar Yoga
A precision-based yoga style emphasising alignment and posture. Yoga props like blocks, straps, and blankets are commonly used to support beginners and deepen awareness.
There are many other yoga types out there, such as Kundalini yoga, Hot yoga, Rocket yoga, etc.
Take your time exploring different yoga classes and styles, and from there, choose the yoga style that feels supportive and enjoyable for you.

3. Find the right yoga studio
When it comes to yoga tips for beginners, we must discuss the importance of finding the right yoga studio for you.
Every yoga studio has its own vibe, teaching style, and community, so it’s worth trying a few yoga studios near you before committing to one.
Choosing a yoga studio with class times that fit your daily routine will make it much easier to stay consistent with your yoga practice.
Tip: Sometimes it’s worth travelling a little farther to attend a yoga studio that offers a wider range of classes, beginner-friendly options, workshops, and a strong sense of community.
4. What yoga class is right for beginners?
If you are starting your yoga journey, I highly recommend beginning with a few yoga classes for beginners.
Beginner yoga classes are usually slower-paced, and the yoga teacher takes more time to explain each posture, offer modifications, and support proper alignment. This helps you build a strong foundation in your yoga practice from the very beginning.
The stronger your foundation, the more confident you will feel on the mat and the more benefits and enjoyment you will get from your yoga practice over time.

5. Pre-yoga nutrition: what to eat before yoga
Can I do yoga after eating? The short answer is yes. But yoga on a full stomach is not the best experience.
Everyone’s body is different; however, I recommend eating 2 hours before yoga and making it a light snack, e.g. apple slices with peanut butter, oatmeal with fruits and nuts, a small salad, etc.

6. First yoga class outfit tips: dress for comfort and movement
One of the simplest yoga tips for beginners is to wear clothes that allow you to move freely and feel comfortable on the mat.
A pair of yoga leggings or flexible workout pants paired with a comfortable yoga top is usually ideal.
When choosing a top, fitted is better than baggy, especially for poses like downward-facing dog, so you don’t have to worry about your shirt slipping when you are upside down.
Stretchy, breathable materials are key, ensuring your clothing moves with you and never restricts your practice.
7. What to bring to the first yoga class
When you pack your bag for your first yoga class, I recommend bringing: a yoga mat, a water bottle, and a small towel, and if you are like me, I always keep a few post-yoga snacks in my bag just in case!
If you don’t have a yoga mat for your first yoga class, no worries, most yoga studios will have mats available; however, keep in mind that there might be a small charge when renting a yoga mat.

8. Get to class early
One of my top yoga tips for beginners is to arrive about 10 minutes early for class, whether it’s your first time or not.
Arriving early gives you time to find your spot, roll out your yoga mat, set up any props, and settle into the space.
Having this extra time also helps you relax and focus. You don’t want to rush into your first yoga class feeling stressed. Starting calm and centred sets the tone for a positive, enjoyable practice.

9. Talk to the yoga teacher
One of the yoga tips not to be missed is to introduce yourself to your yoga teacher and let them know it’s your first class. Don’t be shy, we all started somewhere!
Your yoga teacher might ask about any injuries, pain points, or limitations so they can provide safe adjustments and guidance during class.
10. Trust yourself
Another one of the yoga tips for beginners is to trust the teacher within. This is something you will learn more deeply as your yoga journey unfolds, but it’s worth remembering from the very start.
Yoga helps cultivate self-awareness. Pay attention to the physical sensations that arise during your practice, honour your limitations, and be kind and compassionate with yourself.

This post has been reassuring in that there does seem to be the insta version of yoga where everybody is thin, beautuful, young and fashionable but you put forward the idea that this is not needed. I just really want a good stretch. I would desperately like to start yoga but just cannot get a consistent night when I have that time available. Maybe the solution is online yoga.
