Our daily habits influence the quality of our lives as they shape our health, happiness, relationships and success.

Healthy habits such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, self-care activities, etc. enhance our physical and mental well-being and promote personal growth and development.

Toxic habits, however, can negatively impact our lives and hold us back from living our full potential and embracing all the joy and happiness that life has for us.

Ultimately, the habits we form over time determine our overall quality of life, shaping our daily experiences and life in general.

If you want to live a happier and healthier life, being aware of your toxic habits is key.

The tricky part though, we are not always aware of our toxic habits. Which makes toxic habits to quit a bit more challenging.

What are toxic habits?

Toxic habits are negative behaviour and thought patterns that can be harmful to your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

However, most of the time we are not even aware of our toxic habits. Yet, these toxic habits lead our lives as they guide our decision-making process daily.

They influence how we think, interact with people, show up in the world, etc.

Over time, these toxic habits can create a negative cycle that affects the quality and well-being of our lives.

Why do we have toxic habits?

Toxic habits develop over time and the reasons for having toxic habits can vary.

It can be social and cultural influences, or behaviour patterns that you picked up from your parents, it could be a coping mechanism that you developed over time to deal with e.g. stress and anxiety, a traumatic experience, etc., but it can also be a learned behaviour or simply a lack of awareness.

We are all different, and our stories and experiences are different, hence the reasons why we have toxic habits can vary from person to person.

By identifying these toxic behaviours, also called bad habits, and changing them into good habits, we can live life to our fullest potential and create a life that feels more balanced and aligned with who we are at the essence of our being.

Breaking toxic habits

Understanding the root cause of toxic habits is the first step toward breaking toxic habits.

Below are three strategies to help you break free from toxic patterns:

  • Self-reflection & awareness – question your behaviours and how they impact your daily life; journaling can be a great way to help you gain more self-awareness about your behaviours
  • Develop healthy coping mechanisms – find alternative ways to manage stress and emotions such as exercise, meditation, self-care activities, etc.
  • Set a goal and create a plan – define a clear goal and a plan on how to replace toxic habits with healthy habits

Quit these 11 toxic habits and transform your life today

Below are 11 toxic habits to quit empowering you to become the best version of yourself, celebrate the present moment and embrace your future with a positive outlook.

1. Negative self-talk

Negative self-talk is a toxic habit that is very common and refers to the negative internal dialogue that we have with ourselves.

Examples of negative self-talk are:

  • “I will never get that job, I am simply not good enough let’s face it.”
  • “I am a mess and I will never change.”
  • “I am too old to start something new.”
  • “Why bother trying? I’ll just fail again.”
  • “I will never be as successful as my peers.”

Welcome to your inner critic, also called shadow self.

Negative self-talk will hold you back from shining your light, speaking your truth, and connecting with your purpose.

Constant self-criticism can hugely impact your mental, emotional and physical well-being. It can cause low self-esteem, increase stress and anxiety levels, lower your performance and productivity, lead to depression, etc.

This can also affect your physical health over time leading to a weakened immune system, digestive issues, lack of sleep, and bad posture due to lack of movement, etc.

How to quit this toxic habit:

  • Practise self-awareness
  • Be aware of your negative self-talk when your inner critic comes up
  • Confront your inner critic and question him/her
  • Think like a friend: what would you tell a friend in this situation?
  • Keep in mind that your thoughts are not always reality
  • Have compassion for yourself
  • Learn how to cultivate self-love

2. Spending too much time on social media

Social media can be fun and offers a lot of opportunities, but there are always two sides to the medal and social media can also put a lot of pressure on us.

What you see on social media is usually far from reality and the constant exposure to idealized images and success stories can lead to unhealthy comparisons, feelings of loneliness, fear of missing out and low self-esteem.

In addition, social media platforms are designed to be addictive, the constant flow of new content, endless scrawling opportunities, automated notifications, etc. keep us engaged on these platforms and often result in excessive use.

By spending more time online instead of in the real world, you miss out on important social interactions and build superficial connections rather than meaningful relationships with the people around you.

How to quit this toxic habit:

  • Think about how much actual lifetime you are losing while scrolling through your phone
  • Reduce your screen time per day
  • Introduce a digital detox once a week
  • Spend time doing a hobby
  • Meet up with friends
  • Engage in life
  • After some time, do a recap: check in with yourself and notice what has changed for you. What are the benefits of having less screen time? What has changed positively in your life? How have your relationships changed? Etc.

3. Living in a messy environment

We have all been there…laundry that needs folding piling up on the couch, empty coffee cups in the kitchen sink, the mail from the past two weeks is still sitting on the hallway cupboard, the reminder on the fridge to pay the electricity bill, etc.

Sometimes life takes over, I totally get it, but living in a messy environment can increase your stress levels, decrease motivation, reduce productivity, lower your mood, and make it difficult for you to focus as there are too many distractions around you.

How to quit this toxic habit:

  • Start by organizing your wardrobe
  • Clear out your beauty products
  • Declutter your home room by room
  • Always make your bed in the morning
  • Do a 20-minute surface cleanup once a week to get rid of any clutter piling up
  • Introduce the 2-min rule: For activities that take less than 2 min do them when you spot them
  • Look at your daily routines and find ways to optimize them

4. Comparing yourself to others

Growing up in a society where you are constantly judged by your appearance, education, job title, income, etc. doesn’t generate the confidence to be yourself.

Comparing yourself to others changes your mood instantly. It makes you feel inferior and insecure as you always focus on the lack aka the things you don’t have or can’t do and you always end up losing out.

Constantly comparing yourself to others can result in low self-esteem, increase anxiety and depression, cause feelings of jealousy, hinder your personal growth and personal development, and decrease your motivation as well as the joy of living.

How to quit this toxic habit:

  • Understand that we are all different
  • Understand that not everything is as shiny and perfect as it might look on the outside
  • Focus on your own journey
  • Focus on your own personal development
  • Define your strengths
  • Start to practice gratitude
  • Get to know yourself better and define your personal core values
  • Create a life plan and focus on creating the life that you desire for yourself

5. Worrying about what other people think

The truth is, that people will always judge you or talk about you. No matter what you do or don’t do. So you might as well give them a show.

I always like to refer to Wednesday Addams. She shows us so confidently that no matter who you are, what you look like, where you are from, etc., you already have a place in this world. And all you have to do is take it.

You are the only one accountable for your life, make it yours. You owe it to yourself.

How to quit this toxic habit:

  • Understand that you cannot please everyone in this world
  • Make self-care part of your daily routine
  • Start to cultivate self-love
  • Focus on your core values and goals
  • Set healthy boundaries with the people in your life
  • Speak your truth

6. Binge-watching TV shows & series

Sometimes a Sunday of binge-watching TV shows or series to recover from a busy week or weekend is just what you need. Agreed.

But if binge-watching becomes a regular thing, this can quickly turn into a toxic habit.

Consequences of binge-watching TV can be physical health issues due to the lack of movement, sleep disruption, reduced productivity, social isolation, emotional desensitization, and unhealthy eating habits.

How to quit this toxic habit:

  • Make TV time special, make it a treat
  • Carefully select the content that you are consuming
  • Do something else while watching TV, e.g. fold the laundry, sort out your mail, etc.
  • Start an audiobook or a podcast around a topic that inspires you
  • Define your passions
  • Do more of what makes you happy
  • Start a hobby

7. Being with people who don’t appreciate you

Instead of being with people who are constantly late, criticizing you for your decisions, and complaining about everything, be with people who match your values.

People who inspire you, people you can learn from, people who cheer you on, and people who appreciate you for who you are.

Yes, you risk losing some friends, but I would question whether these people were real friends in the first place.

How to quit this toxic habit:

  • Value and appreciate who you are
  • Be selective when it comes to friendships
  • Set healthy boundaries in your relationships
  • Be ok to spend time with yourself
  • Be yourself when you go out into the world – energy attract
  • Speak your truth

8. Not letting go of the past

Letting go of the past, e.g. a person, a relationship, a job constellation, etc. can hurt. I am with you and letting go can be a difficult one.

But if your mind keeps engaging with the past and cannot let go of it, you will never be fully present and will miss out on living and enjoying your life to the fullest right now, in the present moment.

Holding on to the past holds you back from being fully present.

Letting go takes courage, time, commitment and practice.

However, the rewards for letting go are change, transformation, growth, and development.

How to quit this toxic habit:

  • Identify why you are still holding on to something/someone.
  • What is holding you back from letting go?
  • What are the emotions that are coming up?
  • Where in your life have you maybe experienced these emotions before?
  • Forgive
  • When the time is right, let go

9. Leaving everything last minute

Leaving things to the last minute certainly works for some people and makes them even more productive, however, it also comes with a few consequences and watch-outs.

Leaving things to the last minute can cause unnecessary stress and anxiety. You might not deliver your best work as you don’t have enough time to do things to your best capacity and knowledge.

Last-minute surprises that come up can cause even more stress. Then you are left with the aftermath of leaving things last minute and not having done them properly, etc.

Regrets, disappointment in yourself, knowing that you could have or should have instead of…this is all food for the mind leaving you even more overwhelmed and stressed out than before.

How to quit this toxic habit:

  • Stop procrastinating
  • Plan and break bigger projects down into smaller milestones along the way
  • Eliminate distractions
  • Work on your time management skills
  • Create a to-do list/weekly planner to get things done consistently
  • Think about introducing a Sunday routine
  • Reward yourself along the way

10. Not taking a risk

As human beings, we love our comfort zone. It is what we know, it gives us a sense of safety and control.

But staying in our comfort zone keeps us small, prevents personal growth and development, and holds us back from opportunities that might lead to an even better life.

Replace ‘But what if I fail’ with ‘What if it all works out’ and take it from there.

How to quit this toxic habit:

  • Define what safety means to you
  • Be open to opportunities that come your way
  • Cultivate self-love
  • Practice gratitude
  • Imagine what could change in your life if you finally took that risk….whatever it is for you. What would your life look like? What would your life feel like?

11. Waiting for the right moment

We all know it, yes, there is no right moment, but we still find ourselves hanging around waiting for the right moment.

There is no right moment to start your own business, apply for a new job, or finally take the photography course you have been looking at for the past 6 months.

If you are looking for excuses you will always find excuses.

How to quit this toxic habit:

  • Stop procrastinating
  • Say goodbye to perfectionism
  • Cultivate self-love
  • Practice gratitude
  • Set yourself a deadline
  • Make it happen

There are for sure more toxic habits to quit that can be added to this list, however, the ones I shared with you today, are some of the most common toxic habits and a good starting point.
